Florida is not flat. There is a range of rolling hills across Central Florida that surprises visitors. LandMar Group and Hampton Golf have taken advantage of this unique terrain with two new communities featuring championship golf courses. With elevations approaching 300 feet, these courses offer the feel of Georgia or the Carolinas and the advantage of Florida’s climate. “These courses stand out as two of the most exciting designs to come to this state in years,” said Hampton Golf President M.G. Orender. “Southern Hills Plantation Club and Sugarloaf Mountain have redefined Florida golf.” As past president of the PGA of America (2005-2006), and 30-year veteran of golf management, Orender is a recognized expert on Florida golf. He guarantees, “Southern Hills and Sugarloaf Mountain are must play courses.” Southern Hills is located in Brooksville just north of Tampa Bay. Designed by Pete Dye, Golfweek Magazine rated it one of the country’s Top 100 Residential Courses in 2006 and 2007. It features Dye’s signature style as it winds through steep hills and stands of ancient oak trees. Sugarloaf Mountain, at the highest point on the peninsular, is 40 miles from downtown Orlando in Minneola. It is situated among the high hills overlooking Lake Apopka. Sugarloaf Mountain is the first course in the state by design team Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. Using the exceptional Florida mountain terrain, augmented by thousands of live oaks, they've shaped a course that is true to their minimalist style — in sharp contrast to the manicured approach to golf. It opens officially February 2008. “These courses bookend this hilly part of Florida with two different and memorable designs,” says Orender. “About an hour’s drive apart, we expect to see a lot of reciprocal play between the members.” Both courses are private. However, LandMar offers a special program allowing those interested in real estate and membership to experience the communities and play the courses.
