PoK Premier seeks NAM's help to restart Indo-Pak peace process

Ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's meeting with President Pervez Musharraf on the margins of NAM summit in Havana later this week, Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) Premier Attique Khan has sought the grouping's help to "restart" the Indo-Pak peace process.

In advertisements released in different newspapers here today, the new POK Premier said he "expects" that the 116-member NAM countries "must help re-start the stalled South Asian peace process to evolve a tension free environment in this region for a final settlement of the Kashmir issue in accordance with the wishes of people of Jammu and Kashmir." Khan, whose Muslim Conference Party won the elections to the POK Assembly recently amid allegations of rigging and malpractices as a well as patronage from the government, backed Musharraf's proposals to resolve the Kashmir issue.

He said Pakistan as a sovereign party to the "dispute" forwarded "liberal proposals for a peaceful settlement." The proposals forwarded by Musharraf "suggests the demilitarising of Jammu and Kashmir, introducing self governance there and undertaking joint management of the state of Jammu and Kashmir," he said.

"This proposal in fact constitutes a benchmark, an interim measure to proceed on seeking final solution," he said.

Khan, who accompanied President Pervez Musharraf yesterday on a visit to Brussels, also urged "summit leaders to send a goodwill mission to the disputed state of Jammu and Kashmir as part of their moral, political and diplomatic obligation."
