Larger number of foreign players would be the main attraction of the Premier Hockey League III, which would commence here tomorrow. The 30 foreign players hired this year were allotted to each team in consultation with the coaches, Indian Hockey Federation President K P S Gill told reporters today. Gill said the tournament had helped hockey players gain popularity and people had started identifying them by watching them on television. The seven teams -- Chennai Veerans, Sher-E-Jalandhar, Maratha Warriors, Orissa Steelers, Bangalore Lions, Chandigarh Dynamos and Hyderabad Sultans -- in the tournament would play 21 matches during which they would play each other twice. The first leg will conclude on February 4 after which the teams will move to Chandigarh for the second leg (Feb 11 to Mar 1). The top two teams would play the best-of-three finals -- scheduled on March 2, 4 and 5 -- to decide the winners. The champions will win a purse of Rs 40 lakh while the runners-up will get Rs 15 lakh. On the new rules in the third edition of the PHL, Managing Director, ESPN, R C Venkatesh said an innovative one-on-one method had been introduced for carrying out penalty shoot-outs.
