Public ready to complete unfinished project

By: Tamil Nadu News

Following "unusual delay" in completing the work of Ondipudur railway bridge in the city, local population have expressed their willingness in completing the project.

"If the government accepted their inefficiency to complete it within the stipulated time, they were willing to take up the project and complete it, R K Swaminathan, president of the newly formed 'Ondipudur Membalam badikkappattor Amaippu,' (Association of those affected by Ondipudur Overbridge,) told reporters here today.

Due to delay in construction of the bridge, taken up three years ago and by closing Ondipudur on busy Tiruchy road, at an average two lakh people, including students, were suffering, he said..

Despite promises from minister of state for Railways, R Velu and Central and State government officials, nothing concrete has happened, he said.

Stating that the association has convened a meeting on September 24 to discuss the issue, he said MLAs, MP, State highway minister, Railway officials, besides those in the public forums and industrial association have been invited to attend.

A project of this nature could have been completed within six months even by an average contractor and even now the remaining portion of joining two sides can be completed within two months using modern construction methods, he said.

It appeared that both Centre and State were trying to use this for the civic polls or keep the issue alive for their political needs, Swaminathan alleged.
