Reasons For Adopting A Dog From The Dog Shelter

By: Adrian Fletcher

When getting a new pet many people are wary or shy away from looking in the dog shelter. They feel that dogs that have ended up in the dog shelter must have behavioral problems or that there is something not right about them. This is generally untrue.

The truth is that very few animals at the shelter are there because they have been bad or have socialization problems. The few animals that do fall into this category are never seen by people looking for a new pet as the staff decide that the animals can't be re-integrated into a new family.

Maybe the owner is moving interstate or overseas and can't take their pet. Maybe they got the animal for the wrong reasons. Many people buy dogs on impulse and once the initial excitement and charm has worn off they are not up to the responsibility of providing a home for the animal. Sad as it is, this if often a common reason for dogs going to a shelter. So with this myth dispelled this article will discuss some of the advantages of adopting a dog from a shelter as opposed to other ways to get a pet.

The first advantage of a dog shelter dog is that it may already be trained. This may be the most basic training like toilet training or possibly more advanced obedience training. This is an obvious advantage over, say, a puppy that will need all the training from toilet training through to general obedience training. This may be a more attractive option if you have a busy lifestyle or don't think you will have the time to look after a puppy. It doesn't mean you don't have to care for the shelter dog. It still needs plenty of attention as it has effectively lost it's family and will be a bit anxious about it's new surroundings and family. However after the initial settling in period you may have a dog that is obedient, well socialized and will fit into the family and wider community.

Another advantage of a shelter dog is that you will be able to get a good idea of it's temperament. When you select a pet be sure to take your whole family down to the shelter. Let the kids interact with the animals and see which ones are best suited to your family. It makes the process of selecting a pet more fun too and commits your kids to the dog ensuring that they will help take care of it. Also given the maturity of the dog it is unlikely that it's temperament will change.

The people that work at the shelter generally have a good idea of the temperament of the dog because they spend time with it and see it socialize with other dogs. Ask these people what they think of the dog and what you want from a dog. They can probably make some good suggestions about whether the dog will be suitable.

A dog from the shelter might not be a show dog and it may not have the cuteness of a puppy but it will be a loved and valued member of your family provided you do your homework about the type of dog that will best suit your family.
