The 125-cc segment is set to become the growth engine of the Indian bike market which is witnessing higher replacement cycles from customers, according to a study. The study, conducted by TNS Automotive, shows a right mix of performance, product design and cost of ownership was making the 125 cc segment the preferred option among a large segment of Indian market. "The emergence and growth of this new segment will define the shape and direction of the industry in the years to come," TNS Automotive Senior VP Pradeep Saxena said. He said all major manufacturers and new entrants in the market already had strong models in category and added that the top four models in the segment had a higher score than their counterparts in the 100-cc executive segment. TNS said it compiled the data on responses of more than 8,700 new motorcycle buyers towards the performance of more than 50 models in the key areas of sales satisfaction, product quality, motorcycle performance and design, after-sales service, brand image, and cost-of-ownership. It also said the time for replacement of old bikes was also reducing in the market even though new purchases made up the bulk of purchases. "Although the largest segment of the market continues to be the first new motorcycle buyer, the proportion of additional/replacement customers has grown to 36 per cent in 2006 from 26 per cent in 2003," TNS said.
