Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Tuesday said that the Government has taken various policy initiatives to minimize the requirement of government sanctions for setting up new power projects. “The Government has taken several policy initiatives to minimize the requirement of Government sanctions for setting up new projects in all the segments of power sector - be it generation, transmission or distribution,” Shinde said in his welcome address in the meeting of Consultative Committee, Ministry of Power here. Shinde also said that the Government has also taken steps to resolve and revive languishing projects to improve performance parameters in generating stations, to reduce technical losses and to curb theft and pilferage. “A massive rural electricity infrastructure augmentation drive has also been taken up, “he added. To cater to the needs of the growing economy, he said that the National Electricity Plan envisages elimination of electricity shortages and creation of five percent spinning reserves. “For this Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has assessed that 1,00,000 MW would be required to be added during 10th and 11th Plan Period,” Shinde said. “Out of this, 34000 MW is being added in the 10th Plan Period. The remaining is required to be added in the 11th Plan Period,” he added. Speaking on the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY), the minister said that it aims to provide access to electricity to all households in five years. The Central Government is providing 90 percent capital subsidy under the scheme, the Minister said. The meeting also discussed Project Development and Operations Management by National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). ”NTPC has become the largest power generating company in the country with a total installed capacity of 26194 MW including capacity owned through Joint Ventures,” he said. The company has also firmed up a huge capacity addition programme and plans to add more than 21000 MW during the 11th Plan Period. The Minister lauded the efforts of NTPC in achieving the targets and said that the company is now setting up super critical units of sizes 660 MW and will shortly take up 800 MW units. The Members participated in the discussion urged the Government for more generation of power for the growth of economy and also suggested to exploit the hydel power potentials in the country. They said that the power should be made available to the people at moderate rates. The meeting was attended by the NTPC Chairman and Managing Director, Sankaralingam and Power Secretary, R.V, Shahi. Basudeb Acharia, S.K. Kharventhan, Abdul Rashid Shaheen, K. M. Kader Mohideen, E. Ponnuswamy, Dharmedra Yadav, K.S. Rao, Chandra Shekhar Dubey, Ramadhar Kashyap, Harish Rawat, Devdas Apte, Bashistha Narain Singh, Banwari Lal Kanchhal and Neeta Pateriya also participated in the meet.
