Indian ace Sania Mirza made a fine start in the $1.3 million Acura Classic Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour event in San Diego, California, as she defeated former world No. 11 Meghan Shaunessy in the first round. Sania, ranked 44 in the world, registered a 6-3, 6-1 win over Shaugnessy, winner four career titles, on the hard courts Tuesday, as per the WTA website. Sania, 19, next plays Katarina Srebotnik of Slovakia. Earlier, the Hyderabadi and her South African partner Liezel Huber had moved into the second round with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Canadian-Slovak pair of Maurin Drake and Tina Krizan in a first-round doubles match. The winners will now play Russia's Anna Chakvetadze and Jill Craybas of the US. Sania had reached the semi-finals of the Stanford competition last week with American Barbara Mattek and had reached the final at Mason, Ohio, with Poland's Marta Domashowska.
