Seattle Composer Ellen Lippman Finn Gives New Life to Jewish Tradition

By: Arts & Entertainment News

Ellen Lippman Finn has just published her "Jewish Originals" music for piano book written for beginners and intermediates, Jews and non-Jews alike, offering unique harmonic intervals, haunting melody lines and traditional left hand rhythms. The book begins with easier songs and progresses in complexity, and represents a wide variety of Jewish music genres, including Klezmer, Eastern European Waltzes, Sephardic Tangos, and horas. Her charming music is enlivened with vibrant illustrations created by award winning artist John Hillmer.

According to the composer, “My intention is to perpetuate the beauty and history of Jewish music and to combine it with a somewhat modern touch. There’s a wonderful opportunity here to expose non-Jewish people to the sounds of Jewish tradition.”

The 32-page book contains 15 songs and includes such titles as, “Chutzpadiker Stomp” (Sassy Stomp), “Galui ve-Nistar” (Revealed and Concealed) and “Yeshiva Buchers’Pilpul” (Heated Debate of Yeshiva Boys).
