Sher-e-Jallandhar opened their account in the 3rd Premier Hockey League (PHL) with a 1-0 win over neighbours Chandigarh Dynamos here Friday. Jarnail Singh scored the winning goal indirectly off a penalty corner in the 41st minute at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium. Gagan Ajit Singh took the push and Imran Khan stopped the ball. Khan then pushed it to Baljit Singh Dhillon while Kanwalpreet sold an effective dummy. Dhillon sent in a grounder but Dynamos' custodian Baljit Singh saved the ball. It came back to Jarnail after caressing defender Irshad Ali's foot and the player sent the ball inside the net with a powerful reverse shot. The match had begun on a fast note but both the teams failed to display organised tactics or strategy resulting in a lacklustre game in the first two quarters. Sher-e-Punjab were more prominent in the attack in the second quarter, having a better share of exchanges. But they lacked the precision in the front with their spearheads Gagan Ajit and Dhillion missing close chances. Later, after scoring the goal, Sher-e-Punjab wasted two more short corners and would have gone ahead with their fourth and last set-piece drill. In a back-to-the pusher variation, Dhillon sent it back to Gagan Ajit, but the sweep shot by the later hit Jurgraj Singh's foot before rolling in. Umpire Mohammed Muneer already blew for a penalty stroke. Gagan Ajit, who took the stroke, sent a weak push and Dynamos goalkeeper Baljit Singh had no problem palming it away. Sher-e-Punjab defender Kanwalpreet Singh won the Lion of the Day award.
