Celebrity athletes Mike Weir, Notah Begay, J.T. Snow, Harris Barton and Ronnie Lott, as well as prominent Bay Area businessmen, competed yesterday afternoon and evening at the first annual Silicon Valley Golf Challenge™, a uniquely formatted golf tournament that awarded $250,000 in total prize money to various charities. Lehman Brothers won first place and awarded their $100,000 winnings to two charities – Palo Alto’s East Side College Preparatory and the Northern California Golf Association (NCGA) Foundation. The Challenge will air in an edited half hour television show on Fox Sports Net for public viewing on Friday, October 26 (check local listings for exact times). Held at the Stanford University Golf Course, the Challenge is approved by the United States Golf Association; it is a competitive one-day, “two net best-balls of five” format with a shotgun start. All aspects of the Challenge were closely monitored by NCGA officials. At the conclusion of play, the top eight finishing teams advanced to the final Shoot Out portion of the event for a series of difficult eliminating shots and alternate shot play. “The Challenge participants were able to experience the thrill of a high-adrenaline, pressure-filled environment that only the pros truly understand while gaining the opportunity to give back to the charitable organizations they care about,” commented Erik van Dillen, CEO and Founder of van Dillen Partners, Inc., creators and producers of the Silicon Valley Golf Challenge.
