Social Welfare Board official held for taking bribe

A Social Welfare Board official has been arrested by the anti-corruption wing of the CBI on charges of seeking a Rs 5000 bribe from an NGO, official sources said here today.

After the NGO complained that Welfare Officer Suresh Babu has demanded Rs 5000 for issuance of a certificate, the CBI officials laid a trap and caught him red-handed while accepting the money, they said.

The NGO is running a nursery in Pondicherry for orphans and had applied for the certificate as proof of purchase of creche to get funds from the Central Social Welfare Board.

Principal District and Sessions Judge M Chinnapandi today remanded the official to CBI custody.
