Is Sofia Vergara is too hot for TV? Perhaps that’s why her last show, Hot Properties, was cancelled. People just couldn’t handle her Latin fire on the same screen as three other real estate hotties. Why else wouldn’t they have watched? Now they hope making Vergara an oasis in a gang of schlubby guy criminals will be the right balance. In the show (tentatively titled The Knights of Prosperity), she plays Esperanza, the only girl in a team of losers trying to rob Mick Jagger’s apartment. The show is scheduled to start October 17. The Wave: What’s different about working with a bunch of guys? Sofia Vergara: They take for granted that I need more time for touch-ups and all that. They’re ready in five minutes, and I’m like, “Listen, I just started curling my hair.” TW: So your character uses her beauty to help distract guards. Do you think your beauty distracts people? SV: It’s not even something that you think about, but, of course. If you’re a woman and you’re attractive, many doors open to you because of that. It’s a reality. I’d be lying if I said, “No, no, everything is because of my talent and my personality.” It’s true, but I can’t complain. TW: So you get into places because of your looks? SV: Oh, yeah, of course. Girls don’t have to wait in lines. They go into nightclubs easy. It’s fun. TW: Are you like the character Esperanza at all? SV: Well, I think I’m a tough chick because I come from Colombia, and I think what makes you tough is the experiences you have in life. I’ve been through a lot of crazy stuff, and I think what makes you strong is that you are still up and trying to work and trying to live, no matter what has happened. I hope that I have that strong personality. TW: You play girls who are interested in schlubby guys. Is there hope for them after all? SV: I don’t like pretty boys. I’ve had pretty boys, but not because they’re pretty boys, because they’re successful and they’re funny. They have a lot of stuff around them, not just because they’re pretty boys. TW: Does humor make you sexier? SV: Yeah, I hope so. I think people get a little bit closer to you. They get less, how do you say, scared of you, because if you approach everything with a cute humor and you don’t take yourself too seriously, everybody’s going to like that. TW: How is life in New York? SV: I don’t even know how to grab a cab. It’s horrible. They don’t even care if I flash my [breasts], nothing. It’s horrible. But I’m getting used to it. I’m getting better. TW: You have a 15-year-old son. Are you the coolest mom in the world? SV: I try to be, even though I know he doesn’t think I am. Because as a mom, you want to find out about everything, so I try to give him his space. I try to not be too nosy, but it’s hard for a mom, and I’m a single mother, so it’s harder. You want to be involved with everything, but you learn. TW: But, to his friends, he must be the most popular kid in school. SV: They’re so used to me; they don’t care. It’s like I’m one of the moms. I do sometimes get really happy, because like one Halloween a year ago, they were going trick or treating. They’re 14, they want to go alone, but, of course, they need supervision. And they picked me, but I had to walk one block behind them with a costume on. For me it was very nice that they chose me that I was going to blend in more. TW: What did you wear? SV: I wore like a Catwoman thing because it was the only thing that a friend of mine gave me.
