On September 17, 2006, South Street Seaport Museum will host its third annual marathon reading of Walt Whitman’s classic poem, “Song of Myself.” The reading will take place aboard the tall ship Peking, affording spectacular views of the Brooklyn Bridge and Whitman’s beloved East River. NYU Professor Karen Karbiener will curate the event, leading a team of readers sharing selections from the poem. In the “democratic” spirit of Whitman’s life and work, we are encouraging audience members to join in as readers. Individuals interested in reading can email songofmyself2006 @ yahoo.com for further information. The day’s event will remind us of the relevance of “Song of Myself” for American life today. Whitman’s praise for the energy of the American people, his open-minded and celebratory perspective on individuals from all walks of life, and his vision of New York as a “City of the World” will be evoked by the diversity and enthusiasm of our readers, as well as the setting on the New York waterfront that inspired many of his greatest poems. The reading begins at 5:30 pm and will run until approximately 8:00 pm. Admission to the program is $6 for the general public and $3 for members of the Museum (this fee does not include admission to Museum galleries). Reservations can be obtained by calling 212.748.8786. Tickets can also be purchased on the day of the event at the South Street Seaport Museum Visitor Center on Pier 16 (located at the Eastern end of Fulton Street, just beyond South Street in Manhattan). South Street Seaport Museum, founded in 1967, occupies a 12-square block historic district in Lower Manhattan—site of the city’s original port. The Museum’s mission is to preserve, interpret and display the history of New York as a world port, highlighting both the South Street Seaport District and the tremendous contribution of maritime enterprise to the economic, social, and cultural heritage of the city, the state and the nation. This is accomplished through exhibitions, on- and off-site public programs and formal education programs for students of all ages. The Museum’s main galleries are located at 12 Fulton Street. Museum hours: April–October, daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; November–March, Friday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adults $8, seniors/students $6, children 5–12 $4, children under 5 and Museum Members admitted free.
