Talks between Bhutto, Musharraf at decisive stage: Pak Minister

By: Islamabad News

Islamabad, Jan 4: Talks to work out a political rapprochement between President Pervez Musharraf and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto have reached a decisive stage but no deal has been finalised due to opposition from leaders of ruling PML(Q), a senior Pakistani Minister has claimed.

"Bhutto had agreed for re-election of Musharraf in uniform by the present assemblies for yet another term in office and the deal between the two has not been finalised due to opposition from some ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Q, (PML-Q) leaders," Pakistan Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Sher Afghan said.

The minister- a former Bhutto loyalist turned defector- said the deal between Bhutto's Pakistan Peoples Party, (PPP) and the government was in the interest of the country because democracy would be strengthened and enlightened political forces would emerge victorious by a two-thirds majority in the coming election that would be held in early 2008.

It was unlikely Bhutto would be allowed to return before the general elections due later this year, Afghan was quoted by PPP news agency as saying at Chakwal yesterday.

He said that the bill submitted by Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain regarding women rights would be presented in the session and it was likely to be approved. As per the bill marriages under Vani and to Quran would be regarded criminal acts under the new bill.
