A 10-day handicraft products exhibition, 'Gandhi Shilp Bazar' will be held here from September 12. Around 150 artisans from across the country will participate in the event, George Varghese, Assistant Director (Handicrafts), Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Union Government, Thiruvananthapuram, told a press meet. The exhibition is organised by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles. The programme's objective was to provide marketing support to the rural handicraft artisans, he said, adding from this year, the department would conduct a series of Gandhi Shilp bazars throughout the year at important cities. The programme's important feature was that craftpersons, who have registered their names in the office of the Development Commission (Handicrafts), are directly selling their artefacts to the consumers thereby eliminating the middlemen, he said. Main items on display are wood based handicrafts, hand embroidery, art metal, Madhubani paintings, leather goods terracotta, Kashmiri shawls, printed textiles, Kalamakari paintings, cane and bamboo, hand block printing, blue art pottery, stone carving, beeds works, artificial jewellery, sea shell, jute craft, Lac craft, tribal jewellery and screwpine. Due to the various interventions by the government in the sector the export of handicrafts goods from India had rose to Rs 15000 crore during 2005-06, he said. The Surabhi (Kerala State Handicrafts Apex Cooperative Society) is hosting the Gandhi Shilp Bazar in Kochi.
