The City of West Hollywood, the only California city named to the 2007 list of America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, will celebrate the City’s unique cultural and architectural history at a Historic Preservation Celebration on Wednesday, May 30, 2007 starting at 6 p.m. at the Sunset Tower Hotel, 8358 Sunset Boulevard. The theme of this year's event is "The Sunset Strip," which is the name given to the one and a half mile stretch of Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood that has been synonymous with entertainment and glamour since the 1920s. At the event West Hollywood Mayor John Duran will present the unofficial "Mayor of the Sunset Strip" and famous disc jockey Rodney "On-the-Roq" Bingenheimer a key to the city. The Historic Preservation Celebration will also feature comedian Jeff Hilliard as the Master of Ceremonies; he will also present a short film featuring interviews with the owners of well-known Sunset Strip comedy clubs. DJ Eric ILL will play music from popular artists who got their start on the Sunset Strip from The Doors to Sonny and Cher. Award-winning photographer Dawn Laureen will display photographs of artists and entertainers in and around the Sunset Strip. Historian and filmmaker Marc Wanamaker will present an overview of the history of the Sunset Strip. Celebrity invitees include Cher, Nancy Sinatra, Jimmy O'Neil and Ed Kookie Burns. There is limited parking at the Sunset Parking Hotel. However, guests are encouraged to park at the West Hollywood City Hall parking lot located at 8300 Santa Monica Boulevard. Free shuttles will transfer guests from this location to the Sunset Tower Hotel from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. WHO: West Hollywood Mayor John Duran, West Hollywood City Councilmembers, Rodney "On-the-Roq" Bingenheimer, Jeff Hilliard, DJ Eric ILL, Dawn Laureen and Marc Wanamaker.
