By: Mathew Petrenko

Ukraine is a unitary state located in the south of Central Europe. There are twenty four provinces that named “oblast” are comprised into that country, but there are also two urban districts that are considered to be separate provinces: the capital of Ukraine – Kiev and Sevastopol. Ukraine has a semi-presidential republic. It has set through an orange revolution in December 2004. The current kind of authority is more democratic that the previous one. Now the country is ruled not by a single person, but by several branches of authority. Ukraine borders on Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Moldova and Hungary form the west, Turkey form the south; the Russian boundary is the longest one it is from North and East. There are two mountain systems in Ukraine: Carpathian and Crimea, Crimea mountains are younger and lower. River Dnieper flows through the imaginary center of Ukraine and divide it into two nearly equal parts. There is a great deal of hydroelectric power plants are placed on river Dnieper. The winters thanks to the mild climate are not very cold. It snows frequently and most lakes get covered by ice. The unique climate in summer includes a great amount of showery days, but there are many shiny days too.

Owing to favorable conditions, Ukraine is known for its quality soils and significantly developed agriculture. The perfectly improved agricultural sphere allows Ukraine to export their products to many countries. It exports sugar, corn, vegetables, etc. Kiev is the metropolis of Ukraine and the largest city of the country. It dates its history since the 5th century. That was the little town that became the center of Slavic civilization in the Eastern Europe. The decline of development of Kiev was caused by the Mongolian incursion in the 13th century, the city was completely demolished for a very long time. In the 20th century Kiev was the metropolis of Ukrainian Soviet Republic that was included into the Soviet Union. It was a good chance for Kiev to become a prominent city again. In 2001 here lived 2,611,300 people in Kiev (census data). Females constituted 53 percents and males 47 percents. The majority of population is Ukrainians and Russians, but there is a great deal of various ethnic groups that live there for several hundreds years. The authority of the Soviet Union developed the building of the real estate in Kiev that became the result of extremely growing population. After the independence there created modern condominiums, expensive restaurants and luxury hotels.

Ukraine economy gains power after the period of post Soviet problems. Nowadays Ukraine is very respectable country that is known not as a region of the Soviet Union, but as autonomous country. Ukraine is also going to become a participant of WTO after it ratifies the agreement.
