The legendary F-14 fighter jet, which was made famous by Tom Cruise starrer 'Top Gun', has been retired from the US Navy and is being replaced with the smaller F/A-18 Super Hornet. US Admiral Michael Mullen expressed hopes that this war-plane will be remembered in the same way as the other legendary aircraft, like the Corsair, Mustang and Spitfire. "The F-14 screams toughness. I really believe the Tomcat will be remembered in much the same way as other legendary aircraft, like the Corsair, Mustang and Spitfire, the Mirror quoted the chief of naval operations as saying. "It has been a dogfighter, an interceptor, a reconnaissance platform, even a bomber, whatever the Navy needed it to do," he said. The twin-engine jet known as Tomcat was designed in the 1960s, during the Cold War period, against the former Soviet Union. It is famous for being used in the two Gulf wars, in Iraq and in Afghanistan, but what made it the most recognisable warplane in the US history was the 1986 blockbuster.
