Trawler caught in storm, 12 fishermen in peril

By: Home and Family News

A trawler with 12 fishermen on board was damaged due to a storm in the Bay of Bengal at a spot about 70 kms from Digha coast, bordering Orissa.

The fishermen, all from Nandigram area of East Midnapore district, sent an wireless message about their plight in Digha tonight, Nandigram MLA Mohammad Illyas said.

The 12 had gone for deep sea fishing in the trawler named 'Al Amin' five days back.

Illyas said the help of Coast Guard and police were sought and probably the effort to rescue the fishermen would begin early tomorrow.

A deep depression, formed over the north-west Bay of Bengal, is likely to cross the Orissa coast between Paradip and Balasore late tonight. Heavy rains are reported from Orissa due to the depression.

The spot where the fishermen were caught into the storm was 75 km from Paradip, Illyas said.
