Two Maoists and a state armed policeman were killed and two armed policemen seriously injured in an encounter in Barikul area of Bankura district late tonight, a senior police officer said. The Maoists fired at an armed police outpost at around 9:9-15 pm, drawing retaliation from the policemen, Superintendent of Police Rajesh Sinha said. During the exchange of fire, one policeman was killed. Bodies of two Maoists were seen lying on the ground as other ultras retreated into a nearby jungle after a 30-minute gunbattle. Two other policemen also suffered bullet wounds and were taken to hospital in serious condition. The SP said the number of injured, if any, among the Maoists was not known as they retreated inside the jungle. The area has been cordoned off for combing operation.
