The National award winning Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in San Jose, California, has opened up a “Guru Nanak Study Alcove. The study alcove will have artwork and artefacts relating to Guru Nanak, the first spiritual leader of the Sikh community. Talking to ANI, Ruth E. Kifer, the Dean of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, said that the setting up of the Guru Nanak Study Alcove was being fully supported by the Sikh community of USA. She informed that the library would soon have a number of books on Guru Nanak, besides other material relating to Punjab and Pubnjabi culture. She said that the study alcove would be located on the second floor of the library in the northeast corner of the reference section. Hailing the library’s decision, Dr. Mahinder Singh Madan said that it was a matter of pride for the Sikh community not only in the United States, but in India and other parts of the world. Describing the Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. Library as one of the best libraries in the world, Dr.Madan said setting up study alcoves like this would help in reduction of hate crimes against Sikhs. Professor Atamjit Singh, the Head of the Punjabi department at the State University, San Jose, said the next generation of Sikhs would benefit tremendously from the alcove.
