Madhya Pradesh High Court today directed that the maximum water level of Indira Sagar dam on river Narmada in Khandwa district be increased to 260 metres from 255 metres. A division bench comprising Justice Deepak Mishra and Justice S K Kemkar, while giving the directive on a petition by Narmada Bachao Andolan, held that maximum water level should be upto a height of 260 metres. The court further directed that retired District Judge M R Kasaria be included in the oustees rehabilitation committee of the Grievance Reddressal Authority and the committee should visit the site once a week to take stock of rehabilitation work. It said the families and individuals whose houses face submergence should be rehabilitated within one kilometre radius by providing basic amenities and adult members of every family should be considered as separate units while giving compensation. The court said the government can acquire entire land of those people, 75 per cent of whose land faced submergence. The court also observed that Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA) and Narmada Hydro-electricity Development Corporation (NHDC) were not directly responsible for rehabilitation and the state government should make available land to the oustees in lieu of their land.
