The West Bengal government would resist any move to privatise the mass literacy movement in the state, Minister for School Education Partha Dey said today. ''There are indications that privatisation of the literacy movement is being thought of. Why should this be? Are we not competent enough that we need private players in this?'' Dey asked at the inauguration of a government function to mark International Literacy Day. Asserting that the state government would maintain control of the literacy movement, he said steps would be taken to expand and strengthen the literacy drive by inducting professionals. ''As of now, the literacy movement is being run by volunteers. But the time has come when we have to think of inducting paid people to carry it forward,'' he said. Others who spoke on the occasion included Minister for Higher Education Sudershan Roychowdhury, Minister for Technical Education and Training Chakradhar Maikap, Minister for Minority Development and Madrasa Affairs Abdus Sattar and Minister for Mass Education Tapan Roy. Earlier in the day, a procession to create awareness on literacy was organised on the occasion.
