What are .cn domains?

The .cn domains are the country code top level domains also known as ccTLD meant for the People’s Republic of China. This domain name administration is done through a branch of the Ministry of Information Technology in The People’s Republic of China. The ministry of Information Technology looks after everything right from broadcasting to telecommunications. This is similar to the Federal Communications Commission in the United States of America. This registry is always maintained by the China Network Information Center, which is also known as the CNNIC. Here the actual registration process is done by the commercial registrars, like how it is carried out in the other parts of the world. The Neulevel has entered into a partnership with China Network Information Center to help market the .cn even outside mainland China. At present it falls amongst the top-level domains. It is currently rated the fourth most popular only after the .com, .de and .net.

The .cn was introduced in the year 1987 and is active till date. It was sponsored by the Chinese academy of Sciences. At present it is used by a large number of sited in mainland China and also by sites of companies that are trying to market to mainland China. Even today there is much hoarding and speculation that is going on regarding this. About the second level domains, like in most countries people here are allowed to register for second level domain names. However there are certain ones for a particular organization or geographic locations. The third level registrations were available long before the second level registrations came into being.

The second level registrations were available only from the year 2004. Some of the generic second level domains are .ac.cn: Academic or scientific research institutions, .com.cn: Commercial, .edu.cn : Educational institutions, .gov.cn : Government agencies, .net.cn : Internet oriented organizations and .org.cn : Organizations. Now domain names can also have Chinese Characters in them. They will have to be registered with the second level under the .cn “top level domain”. Regarding the .cn value, they offer all their registrants the protection of a brand name that is very “well- established”. It promises to be one of the most lucrative marketplaces in the world in the near future. Furthermore, they can also put Chinese customers at ease providing them a market that has a large localized Chinese presence alongside the international one. They also enjoy a widespread recognition in the Chinese market place even at present. These domain names can be registered for one to five years depending on the customers need.

With this kind of local domain many businesses and organizations in China are now doing well in the business sector. They are able to communicate easily with other local businesses and the profits for many companies are going up. They are able to offer website in their own language and are readily accessible to the Chinese market, especially for those people that are not too comfortable with the English language.
