William C. Hubbard, a highly respected lawyer with the lawfirm of Mullins Riley & Scarborough in Columbia, South Carolina, has been selected to receive the American Inns of Court’s 2007 Professionalism Award for the Fourth Circuit. The award will be presented at the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference in White Sulphur Springs, West Virigina, on June 29, 2007, at 9:00 a.m. by the Honorable William W. Wilkins, Jr., Chief Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

The Fourth Circuit Professionalism Award is presented bi-annually to honor a senior practicing judge or lawyer whose life and practice display sterling character and unquestioned integrity, coupled with ongoing dedication to the highest standards of the legal profession. Candidates are nominated through circuit-wide open nominations and selected by a panel of representatives from both the circuit and the American Inns of Court Foundation.

Mr. Hubbard was born and raised in South Carolina and graduated from the University of South Carolina where he earned both his undergraduate degree (magna cum laude) and his Juris Doctor. After clerking for a year with U.S. District Court Judge Robert F. Chapman, he entered private practice where he has focused on business litigation. In 1986, he was named the South Carolina Bar’s Young Lawyer of the Year.

Hubbard served on the Board of Trustees for the University of South Carolina and was its chair from 1996 to 2000. He was also president of the region’s Council of Boy Scouts, served in Voices for South Carolina Children which promotes early childhood education, and has been a leader in the American Bar Association, presently serving as the South Carolina’s Delegate to the ABA House of Delegates. An active member of the John Belton O’Neall Inn of Court, Hubbard was nominated for this award by each of the past 12 presidents of the Inn and supported by State Supreme Court justices and leaders of both the South Carolina Bar and the ABA.

The American Inns of Court Foundation, America’s oldest, largest and fastest growing mentoring organization, presents Professionalism Awards at participating circuits nationwide. The awards are underwritten in part by Thomson-West Group.
