Wireless Routers - How To Choose The Right One

By: Alex Morgan..

Wireless routers are a kind of network equipment that connect and route network traffic between different networks. Wireless routers are used to build local wireless networks that communicate with each other without using physical wires. This article will focus on the top 3 wireless routers and help you choose the right one.

How to choose the right wireless router

Even though there are many wireless routers on the market today, we're going to look at the top 3 that stand out from the crowd.

Number 1 is the Belkin wireless G router. This is a tried and tested router and not surprisingly it's one of the best selling high speed wireless routers around. The Belkin router allows you connect to your cable, DSL, or ADSL modem. It then lets you share your internet access and files.

The Belkin router is easy to setup and has several security features including WEP and WPA which will help you keep your computer secure. You'll also get 6 months free of built-in parental control, web filtering, and pop-up and spyware protection.

Next on our list is the D-Link wireless G router. As with the Belkin, this wireless router allows you to connect a basic wireless network together and share internet access between computers connected to your wireless network. It also lets you share files and even chat to friends and family online.

With this router it's straightforward to protect your network from trojans and computer viruses. The D-Link router has a great set up wizard that will guide you through setting everything up, including all your connection settings from your ISP.

The last one is the Linksys wireless G router. This router has some cool features including a 54 Mbps transfer, 24GHz frequency, advanced security options including NAT technology, a DHCP server, and a built-in 4-port 10/100 Ethernet switch with auto speed sensing. It's also has 128-bit WEP encryption.

Even though these are 3 of the best options, there are still other wireless routers worth a look, especially those from Netgear, for example. In any event, you should take the time to consider all the options, and make a list of requirements beforehand so you can tick them off against the features of each router. You should also set yourself a budget - it's too easy to be swayed by the latest and greatest features and end up spending more than you need to.

For a beginner, choosing the right wireless router can be intimidating, but so long as you stick to the most popular models, refer to your list of requirements, and ignore most of the sales hype, you'll be Ok.

By the way, if at all possible, it's worth trying to get hold of a wireless router thats' made by the same company as your network card. This will simplify installation.
