Yana speaks up for performing bears

By: Arts & Entertainment News

Yana Gupta, who scaled heights after her hit item number "Babujee" in which she was seen riding a buffalo, has just finished shooting an ad campaign for People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

The ad, shot by Atul Kasbekar, is especially designed to save bears who are trained to dance through a regime of pain and starvation by madaaris (street performers), reports Bollywood Trade.

The ad has a fake bear with a message saying "Bears are not item numbers". The main message of the ad is that the bears shouldn't be tortured merely for the sake of entertaining people.

"It is time we generate awareness and take action against the ill-treatment meted out towards animals. The street bears don't dance on their own. They are made to dance and they suffer in pain. It's very traumatising and something has to be done," says Yana, who will be seen in another PETA ad where she will wear clothes designed by Rocky S.

Under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, it is illegal to capture and trade bears in India. However, this law is blatantly ignored and bears can still be seen in the streets of India.
